OK City Chorus newcomers find friendship, joy and community at Sweet Adelines Region 25 Competition
~ Submitted by Cindy Allen ~
For OK City Chorus members singing for the first time at the Sweet Adelines Region 25 competition, the event brought out a blend of camaraderie and nerves – then flash! It was over!
Yet, the newcomers said they were in awe of the sense of community, the excitement, the adrenaline and the profound support of all the competitive choruses genuinely cheering each other on, offering hugs, compliments and encouragement.
Regional competition took place March 21-22 in Richardson, TX with some 14 choruses and dozens of quartets competing over the two-day period.
“I absolutely loved my first regional. I felt so welcomed,” said Keziah Montgomery.
“Performing for the first time on Saturday was such a good experience and later that day, I danced the night away with some of my very best friends.”
Whether you're performing in a quartet or as part of a larger chorus, the sense of community is strong, newcomers agreed. Getting into costume and makeup adds to the sense of occasion — sequins, bold lipstick and plenty of hairspray signal that it's time to shine.
For newcomers experiencing backstage for the first time, the bright lights and the different sound of the stage was a new experience.
“Seriously, I started to cry in rehearsal,” said Myrth Mehl. “The community of the women that make up our chorus really hit me. I learned so much, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude for this opportunity.”
She said she was surprised how quickly the time went.
“It was over too soon,” she said. “Next time I think I will realize ‘this is it’ without do-overs in practice.”
OK City Chorus performed for evaluation and was the first group on stage on Saturday. Although the chorus didn’t really expect many spectators that early, they were elated when the cheers started as they took the stage.
Many friends, family and even other chorus members were indeed in the audience cheering OK City Chorus on, making it a thrilling, emotional and unforgettable experience. "Regional was a wonderful experience. Everyone was really welcoming,” said Ashwini Ganeshan. “And it was a pleasure to experience such high-quality performances by quartets and choruses."
The newcomers agreed the event demonstrated growth, friendship and the joy of performing together.
