The Competition Process

Singers move through four rounds of competition: Open Auditions, Callbacks, Semi-Finals and Finals. The specifics of each competition round are outlined below.


1. Open Auditions

  • Open Auditions for 2013 will take place in four different cities
  • Singers will receive a call or email from the Registrar after completing registration with a specific Audition time. (Please call 720-SING if you haven't been contacted with your audition time within one day of registration.)
  • Singers should arrive and check in 30 minutes prior to their actual audition time.
  • Singers will sing approximately 16 bars of any music piece
  • Song MUST be sung a cappella
  • Singers receiving a Callback to the next round will be given an assigned time for later that same day at the same location

2. Callbacks (Same day and location as Open Auditions)

  • Singers should be prepared to sing 1 minute of any musical selection
  • Song can be a cappella or accompanied
  • CD player will be available for tracks or singers can accompany themselves on a self-contained instrument such as acoustic guitar. (NOTE: Accompaniment by another musician is NOT allowed.) 
  • Singers will be notified by email if they have advanced to the Semi-Finals round of the competition after the last round of Open Auditions on Sunday, April 14th.

3. Semi-Finals

  • Singers will sing a full song no longer than 3:30 minutes
  • CD player will be available for tracks or singer can accompany themselves on an instrument they provide. (NOTE: Accompaniment by another musician is NOT allowed.)
  • Contestants perform onstage before a live audience and panel of judges
  • Expert panel of judges give onstage critique to contestants to help improve their singing in the event they should advance to the next round. All critiques are done in a positive manner and is helpful information for all singers involved.
  • Announcement of 10 Finalist will be done at the conclusion of the Education Symposium and posted to this website

4. Finals 

  • Singer can repeat the same song they used for Semi-Finals or select a new song
  • Guidelines for Finals are the same as Semi-Finals: full song no longer than 3:30 minutes. CD player available for tracks, singer can provide and play own instrument for accompaniment, CANNOT have another musician accompany.
  • Semi-Finals judging panel scores will carry over to Finals and count for half of the Finalists' score.
  • Judges for the Finals Show are the AUDIENCE members!!!!! Each ticket holder will receive a ballot and those votes will account for the second half of the Finalists' score.
